What is hydrolat?
Hydrolates are the products of water-based steam distillation. They are created when essential oils are distilled from herbs and are sometimes called hydrosols or floral waters. Hydrolate therapy is part of both phytotherapy and aromatherapy. Hydrosols work on a different principle than essential oils, as some of their components are hydrophilic, i.e. water soluble. These components are only preserved in hydrolates, not in essential oils. Hydrolates also contain more organic acids, which are attributed with an anti-inflammatory effect. Hydrolates are acidic and therefore prevent bacterial growth.
Wellness and cosmetics
Hydrolates serve as a great skin toner, the choice is wide - depending on your skin type. They are also suitable for cosmetics - clay masks, creams, soaps. Hydrolates can also be used as a steam bath to cleanse the skin - as a poultice for tired eyes, or after a hard day's work you can spray the hydrolates on the body to relieve stress and refresh the body.
