Although saffron is known as a culinary spice, used in dishes around the world for thousands of years, its therapeutic properties are less well known.

Crocin is the most important nutrient in saffron to support eye health. Once in the stomach, saffron is converted into crocetin, which your body quickly absorbs in the intestines and delivers to target areas such as the retina.

It helps protect the photoreceptor cells in the retina from oxidative stress. Helps promote blood flow in the retina and surrounding areas. Helps promote better oxygen delivery to the eyes.

In addition to its flavor-giving properties, saffron has an unusually complex composition, with more than 100 compounds discovered to date, including active principles such as carotenoids. Known for their antioxidant potency, these compounds are the natural orange, yellow and red pigments responsible for saffron's orange-red color. In addition to these antioxidants, saffron also consists of safranal. Primarily responsible for the spice's characteristic smell, this molecule is also used as the active principle in a number of therapeutic preparations.

For several years, scientists have become increasingly interested in saffron's potential for maintaining visual health and preventing eye disease.
Of particular interest are two carotenoids called crocin and crocetin. These molecules have antioxidant potency and anti-apoptotic effect, and so are touted for the prevention of certain eye diseases.

Thus, they may help to support the antioxidant defense of retinal photoreceptors. It increases blood flow to the retina.
Protect the retina from daily oxidative damage caused by free radical oxidation caused by exposure to high levels of light and smoking.
