Camphor stimulates the nerve endings sensitive to cold and heat so that it is cooling when applied gently and warming when applied for a longer and stronger period of time.

This causes local anaesthesia - numbness and pain relief. It has antimicrobial properties. Ayurvedic medicine uses it as part of tea blends with anti-inflammatory effect and to suppress feelings of elevated temperature. Camphor was part of the lincture paregoric (opium camphor tincture), which was invented in the 18th century and was the most commonly used remedy for diarrhea, coughs, colds, soothing, tooth brushing, etc. for the next few centuries. Its use ended with the advent of opium regulation in the 20th century.
